Super Falcons defender, Michele Alozie has deactivated her Instagram account after coming under sustained fire from Nigerian fans in the wake of the national women’s team’s failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, a first in the country’s football history.

Nigeria’s troubles began at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where Justine Madugu’s side crashed out at the quarter-final stage following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cameroon, immediately costing them an automatic ticket to the World Cup.

Their last remaining route to the tournament ran through a play-off against South Africa, but the Super Falcons fell 2-1 to Banyana Banyana, ending any hope of reaching the global showpiece and, with it, snapping Nigeria’s run of qualifying for every edition of the Women’s World Cup dating back to 1991.

The fallout has been brutal, with fans directing frustration not just at head coach Madugu and the Nigeria Football Federation but at several individual players, Alozie chief among them. The defender, a regular fixture in the Super Falcons setup, has previously faced criticism over her active social media presence, including light-hearted content shared with teammates that some fans felt was ill-timed given the team’s on-field struggles.

This time, however, the backlash carried far more weight, tied directly to the historic nature of the qualification failure rather than any off-field distraction. Her account has remained inactive since the criticism intensified, with reports indicating she pulled it down entirely rather than weather the storm publicly.

The disappointment surrounding Alozie is part of a much larger crisis gripping Nigerian football. This World Cup cycle has proven uniquely painful for the country, with the Super Falcons, the men’s Super Eagles, and the U-20 Flying Eagles all failing to secure qualification for their respective global tournaments, an unprecedented collapse across every level of the national program in the same cycle. The scale of the disappointment has fuelled growing calls from fans and pundits alike for Madugu’s removal and for sweeping changes within the NFF’s leadership, with many arguing that the federation’s handling of the women’s game needs urgent scrutiny following a campaign that promised so much before unravelling in the space of two matches.
