Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi is on the verge of a fresh Premier League chapter after Coventry City reached a club-to-club agreement with Nottingham Forest for his permanent transfer, with the Nigerian forward now undergoing his medical ahead of an official unveiling.

Transfer specialist, Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development, describing it as a done deal pending the completion of formalities, with Coventry lining up Awoniyi as a new striking option for manager Frank Lampard’s rebuilt squad.

The move brings the curtain down on a four-year spell at the City Ground, during which the 29-year-old made 103 appearances across all competitions, scoring 23 goals and registering five assists.

He arrived at Forest from Bundesliga side Union Berlin in 2022 and was instrumental in helping the club secure and later retain its place in the Premier League, though persistent injury setbacks and increased competition for places, particularly from Chris Wood and Igor Jesus, saw his game time shrink significantly last season, when he managed just four goals and one assist in 17 league outings.

At Coventry, Awoniyi will link up with fellow Super Eagles international Frank Onyeka, who completed his own permanent move to the CBS Arena earlier this year after an impressive loan spell from Brentford. Onyeka made 14 Championship appearances during that loan stint, contributing a goal and an assist as Lampard’s side stormed to the Championship title and secured a return to the Premier League after a 25-year absence. Coventry subsequently triggered the obligation-to-buy clause in his loan agreement, confirming his permanent switch in June.

Awoniyi’s arrival marks the second time this year that Lampard has turned to Nigerian talent to strengthen his newly promoted side, and the presence of an established compatriot in the dressing room is expected to help ease his transition into a demanding first season back in the top flight.

The Kwara State-born forward, who won the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup with Nigeria, previously featured for clubs including Mainz 05, Gent and NEC Nijmegen before his move to Germany and, eventually, England. Notably, Awoniyi has not featured for the Super Eagles since October 2024, having missed AFCON 2025 and turned down a call-up for the Unity Cup in London during this year’s June international break, citing personal reasons.

With his medical underway and no complications reported, Awoniyi is expected to be confirmed as a Coventry City player in the coming days, giving Lampard fresh attacking firepower as the Sky Blues prepare for the significantly higher demands of Premier League football.
