Fifteen construction workers escaped unharmed on Wednesday after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in the Unguwar Rogo area along Bauchi Road in Sokoto metropolis.

The incident occurred in the afternoon, prompting an emergency response amid concerns that several workers might have been trapped beneath the rubble.

Rescue officials, however, confirmed after a thorough search that everyone at the construction site had been safely accounted for, with no injuries or deaths recorded.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), through its Sokoto Operations Office, said it activated its Search and Rescue Team immediately after receiving a distress alert at about 2:23 p.m.

According to the agency, rescue personnel worked alongside other emergency responders to search the debris, ensure no victims were trapped and secure the area to prevent further hazards.

The operation involved officials of the Federal Fire Service, Sokoto State Fire Service, Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigeria Police Force, the Sokoto State Urban Planning and Development Authority, the State Association of Civil Engineers and members of the host community.

The spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufai, confirmed that the collapse did not result in any casualties or injuries.

Reacting to the incident, the owner of the building project, Alhaji Auwal Abubakar, described the collapse as unfortunate but expressed relief that all the workers on the site escaped safely.

Authorities have commenced an investigation to establish the cause of the structural failure.
