Rivers Police Probe Alleged Patricide Linked to Family Property Dispute

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a man for allegedly killing his father, retired Marine Captain David Nwoke, during a reported dispute over family property at Oro Ekpo Estate in the Ada George area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, confirmed the arrest on Thursday, stating that the suspect is in police custody while detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The alleged attack occurred on Sunday morning and has left residents of the neighbourhood in shock.

According to a source familiar with the incident, the deceased had recently informed his children of plans to relocate to his hometown in the South-East and had begun distributing some of his properties among them.

The source alleged that the suspect, identified as a son of the deceased’s second wife, became dissatisfied after requesting one of his father’s vehicles and being refused.

The source further claimed that the suspect waited inside the house until the retired officer returned from his routine morning exercise before allegedly attacking him with a machete.

A domestic worker who reportedly attempted to intervene was also allegedly attacked but escaped without fatal injuries.

Despite sustaining injuries, the retired officer reportedly managed to flee downstairs while calling for help. However, the suspect allegedly caught up with him and continued the attack until he died.

The source added that the suspect allegedly took the keys to the disputed vehicle before locking himself inside a room in the house.

Neighbours were alerted after one of the house staff raised an alarm, prompting officers from the Rumuokpani Police Division to respond to the scene and arrest the suspect.

Confirming the development, Agabe said investigations had commenced and assured that the matter would be thoroughly investigated to ensure justice is served.

She added that further information would be released as the investigation progresses.
