Fulham Appoint Arbeloa as Silva’s Successor on Three-Year Deal

Fulham have appointed Álvaro Arbeloa as their new head coach on a three-year contract, ending days of speculation over who would replace Marco Silva at Craven Cottage. The 43-year-old Spaniard, who was most recently interim manager at Real Madrid, takes charge of the Premier League club following Silva’s departure to Portuguese giants Benfica.

Silva left Fulham after five successful years in charge to replace José Mourinho at Benfica, catching the club’s board somewhat off guard. Fulham’s vice-chairman had earlier revealed that Silva initially indicated he wanted to stay before changing his mind and opting for the move to Portugal. His exit triggered a search that saw several high-profile names linked with the vacancy, including former Tottenham and Brentford boss Thomas Frank, while ex-Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna was reportedly considered too expensive once his salary and staff costs were factored in.

Arbeloa emerged as the frontrunner for the role after impressing Fulham’s ownership with his vision for the club, with his candidacy said to have been strengthened by glowing references from recently re-elected Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez and the Spanish club’s new manager, Mourinho, whom Arbeloa played under at the Santiago Bernabéu. Arbeloa had taken interim charge of Real Madrid following Xabi Alonso’s departure in January, guiding the club through its final 28 matches of the season as they finished second in La Liga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Speaking after his appointment, Arbeloa described it as a real honour to begin a new stage of his career at Fulham, which he called the oldest club in London. He expressed gratitude to chairman Shahid Khan and vice-chairman Tony Khan for the trust placed in him and said he was looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere at Craven Cottage as he begins pre-season with the squad. Khan, in turn, praised Arbeloa’s ambition and his exposure to elite players, clubs, and methods across his career, adding that his interest in developing the club’s academy and his attacking style of play made him an ideal fit to lead Fulham into the new season and beyond.

Arbeloa is reportedly keen to bring some familiar faces with him from Madrid, including attacking midfielder Franco Mastantuono, full-back Fran Güler, and forward Gonzalo García. However, the appointment has already drawn some scepticism, with former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor suggesting Fulham could face a difficult season under a manager he considers a big risk, citing Arbeloa’s lack of senior managerial experience outside Real Madrid’s academy setup.
