We Don’t Want Hausas Here, Ojoo Residents’ Plead with Oyo Government
Tension has continued to simmer in the Ojoo area of Ibadan following last month’s deadly clash between Yoruba and Hausa residents, as the Oyo State Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, visited the community to engage with aggrieved residents over the lingering security concerns.
In a widely circulated video, Yoruba residents of the area were seen confronting the deputy governor, insisting that non-indigenes linked to the unrest be made to leave the community, which they described as a vital commercial hub.
The unrest traces back to an early morning clash on June 8, 2026, which erupted after the alleged killing of a Yoruba tricycle mechanic, reportedly stabbed to death during an overnight altercation involving suspected Hausa scrap collectors in the area. The killing triggered anger among youths in the community, who took to the streets in protest, with some suspected scrap collectors reportedly attacked in the aftermath. The clash forced several residents to flee their homes for fear of reprisals, prompting the deployment of security operatives to the area to restore calm and prevent a further breakdown of law and order.
During the deputy governor’s visit, residents pressed their demands directly, telling him they did not want those they held responsible for the unrest to continue living in their midst, citing fears for their safety at night. They stressed that Ojoo’s status as a commercial hub made peaceful coexistence and security especially important, and called on the state government to act decisively to prevent a recurrence of the violence.
The incident is one of several flashpoints of inter-communal tension recorded in parts of Ibadan in recent months, with similar disputes reported in nearby areas including Moniya and Sasa. Authorities have continued to maintain a security presence in the affected communities as they work to calm tensions and prevent further escalation. As of the time of this report, the state government had not announced any specific new measures beyond the ongoing security deployment in response to residents’ demands.
