FG Plans Deploying 10,000 Electric Tricycles Nationwide

The Federal Government has announced plans to deploy 10,000 electric tricycles across Nigeria beginning in August as part of efforts to promote clean energy transportation, reduce the cost of mobility, and create economic opportunities for Nigerians.

Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed the initiative during a meeting with members of the Transporters for Tinubu/Shettima group at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. He said the programme forms part of the administration’s broader agenda to modernise the nation’s transport sector while advancing sustainable energy solutions.

According to the Vice President, the first batch of the electric tricycles will be deployed through the North East Development Commission before the programme is expanded to other regions of the country through the various regional development commissions.

Shettima explained that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved the expansion of the initiative nationwide, describing it as a strategic intervention aimed at making transportation more affordable and environmentally friendly.

He noted that the deployment of electric tricycles would not only reduce dependence on fossil fuels but also lower transportation costs for operators and commuters, while contributing to efforts to curb carbon emissions.

The Vice President further stated that the Federal Government remains committed to developing an integrated transportation system that combines road, rail, maritime and inland waterway networks to improve connectivity and stimulate economic growth.

Industry experts have welcomed the initiative, saying it could accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in Nigeria while creating jobs in vehicle assembly, maintenance, battery management and charging infrastructure.

The planned rollout is expected to strengthen the government's clean energy agenda and support ongoing efforts to diversify Nigeria’s transport sector through innovative and sustainable mobility solutions.

With the launch scheduled for August, stakeholders are optimistic that the initiative will provide a major boost to public transportation and enhance access to affordable mobility across the country.
