Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for greater recognition of Africa as an equal partner in global affairs, emphasizing the need for the continent to play a more central role in discussions on trade, governance, innovation and sustainable development.

Obi made the call following a meeting with Alex Vines, Director of the Africa Programme at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), in London on Tuesday.

In a post shared on his official Facebook page, the former Anambra State governor said the engagement formed part of his ongoing efforts to deepen knowledge and contribute positively to society through constructive international dialogue.

According to Obi, discussions during the meeting focused on strengthening strategic relationships and fostering a deeper understanding of Africa’s evolving position in global affairs.

He noted that Africa should no longer be viewed solely through the lens of statistics or humanitarian challenges but as a serious partner capable of shaping the future global order alongside emerging centres of influence such as India and Indonesia.

“Our discussions focused on strengthening strategic relationships and fostering a deeper understanding of Africa’s evolving role in global affairs,” Obi stated.

He added that the meeting underscored the importance of placing Africa, particularly Nigeria, at the centre of international conversations on partnership, economic cooperation, governance, innovation and sustainable development.

Obi further stressed that constructive dialogue and mutual respect remain critical to building stronger cooperation between African nations and the international community.

The former presidential candidate has in recent years consistently advocated increased investment in human capital development, education, productivity and international partnerships as key drivers of Africa’s growth and competitiveness in the global economy.

The London engagement is one of a series of international meetings undertaken by Obi as part of his efforts to promote discussions on governance, economic development and Africa’s future role in global decision-making.
