Chelsea Can Be a Real Threat Next Season Despite Missing Europe, Rooney

Former England captain Wayne Rooney has offered a surprisingly optimistic take on Chelsea’s dismal end to the 2025/26 Premier League season, insisting that the club’s absence from European football next term could prove to be an unexpected advantage rather than a setback. Speaking on his podcast following the final day of the season, Rooney predicted that Chelsea have what it takes to emerge as genuine title contenders under their incoming manager.

Chelsea concluded a turbulent campaign in tenth place after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Sunderland on the final day, a result that confirmed their failure to qualify for either the Europa League or the UEFA Conference League. It was a bruising end to a season that also saw the club sack two managers Enzo Maresca and his successor Liam Rosenior before appointing Spanish tactician Xabi Alonso as head coach. Despite those upheavals, Rooney believes the stage is now set for a genuine resurgence.

“I think they’ll be a real threat next season,” Rooney said. “Obviously having one game a week, and then with Alonso coming in, I think it’s exciting for the Premier League because I think he’s got the potential to be a top manager. It gives him a period of time to feel his way into the club and get his ideas across. So I think it will benefit the football club.”

The former Manchester United striker argued that the reduced fixture load would give Alonso crucial time on the training ground to instil his tactical philosophy without the interruptions of midweek continental football.

Rooney also pointed to the disrupted pre-seasons that rival clubs face due to the upcoming World Cup as another factor likely to work in Chelsea’s favour. He noted that sides with European commitments would be squeezed further, while Alonso would have the space and time to properly bed in his ideas from the start of the campaign. He cited Manchester United’s own season in which the club had no European obligations and finished third in the Premier League as evidence that fewer fixtures can benefit teams competing at the top of the table.

Chelsea had entered the current season as Club World Cup winners but never translated that pedigree into domestic consistency. Their European adventure ended in humiliation, with Paris Saint-Germain handing them an 8-2 aggregate defeat in the Champions League last 16. Yet with a reputable new head coach arriving and a lighter schedule ahead, the club can at least draw some comfort from Rooney’s assessment that their wilderness year may yet serve a transformative purpose.
