Customs Intercepts Luxury Bus Laden With Military Camouflage Uniforms, Cannabis Indica Worth Over N259 Million in Ogun

Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun Area One Command, have recorded yet another major enforcement breakthrough after intercepting a commercial luxury bus carrying a dangerous mix of camouflage military uniforms and suspected Cannabis Indica with a combined duty paid value of over two hundred and fifty-nine million naira.

The seizure, which has sent fresh shockwaves through the anti-smuggling landscape in Ogun State, further exposes the increasingly brazen tactics employed by criminal networks determined to move prohibited and security-sensitive goods across Nigerian borders.

The interception was made during routine intelligence-led patrol operations for which the Ogun Area One Command, based along the Idiroko border corridor, has become widely respected. According to the command, the luxury passenger bus, ordinarily associated with commercial interstate travel, had been co-opted by suspected smugglers as a cover to ferry the contraband through security checkpoints undetected.

The concealment of military-grade camouflage uniforms alongside a narcotic substance in the same consignment has raised immediate concerns about the possible nexus between drug trafficking and the unlawful circulation of security-sensitive materials.

The discovery of military camouflage uniforms is particularly alarming given the country’s ongoing security challenges. Under Nigerian law, camouflage and military-pattern clothing are restricted items that only authorised military and security personnel are permitted to wear or possess, and their unlawful distribution is considered a serious national security threat.

Investigators are working to establish the origin of the uniforms, their intended destination, and the identities of those who commissioned the smuggling operation.

The suspected Cannabis Indica recovered alongside the uniforms, popularly associated with the Ghana Loud variant that has been a recurring target of the Ogun Area One Command’s enforcement operations, adds a further criminal dimension to an already alarming seizure.

The Ogun Area One Command has been on a sustained enforcement surge in recent months. The command recorded 73 seizures within just 41 days between March and May 2026, with total seizures valued at over N6.77 billion across that period, and has handed over tens of thousands of cannabis parcels to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency as part of deepening inter-agency collaboration. The latest interception reinforces the command’s position as one of the most active and effective anti-smuggling formations in Nigeria’s customs architecture, even as it signals that criminal networks continue to evolve their methods to evade detection.

Authorities have assured the public that all suspects connected to the seized luxury bus will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law. The Acting Customs Area Controller of the command has consistently warned that the Ogun Area One Command will remain a hostile environment for smugglers, and that no mode of conveyance however innocuous in appearance is beyond scrutiny. The seized items have been secured as exhibits pending further investigation, with the military uniforms expected to be referred to the appropriate security authorities for assessment.
