Khanna Accuses Trump of Panic Move After Announcing End to Israel Aid

US Congressman, Ro Khanna has accused President Donald Trump of acting out of political fear after Trump said Washington will stop giving Israel about $4 billion a year in aid.

Khanna, a California Democrat, said in a post on X that the announcement showed Trump was “desperate to stave off a Blue tsunami.” He said establishment Democrats, who lost to Trump twice, had dismissed the idea of cutting aid as too radical, and he thanked the president for showing the party the way. He tagged Democrats who have criticised Israel, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Zohran Mamdani.

Trump made the announcement on Tuesday, Election Day for the midterms, in a phone interview with Fox News. He said he had struck a deal with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu months ago, and that Netanyahu had approached him about the idea.

He said Israel no longer needs the money and can still buy American weapons. He also said Democrats had turned the aid into a campaign talking point, pointing to candidates such as Michigan Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed.

Key details remain unclear. Trump said the $4 billion covers military hardware or cash, but it is not yet known how the cut would work, since the current agreement providing about $3.8 billion a year in military aid runs until 2028. Netanyahu’s office had not immediately commented, though he has previously spoken of gradually weaning Israel off American military aid over the next decade.

Khanna has become one of the most vocal critics of Israeli policy in Congress and has called for an end to aid. He was detained by armed Israeli settlers during a trip to the West Bank earlier this year.
