Edo Police Detain Checkpoint Team Over Alleged Extortion by Vigilante Operative

The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into allegations that a vigilante operative extorted money from motorists at a checkpoint along Agbede in the state.

The investigation followed the circulation of a video on social media showing the operative at the checkpoint with some money reportedly found in his possession.

The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the vigilante operative had been identified by the Auchi Area Commander, who had commenced a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

She disclosed that the entire police team attached to the checkpoint had been detained as part of the investigation, while the team leader had been queried over possible supervisory responsibility.

The police said the investigation would establish the facts surrounding the incident and determine the appropriate action against anyone found culpable.

The command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability and discipline among security personnel, stressing that allegations of misconduct would be thoroughly investigated.

Residents were also encouraged to report emergencies, suspicious activities and misconduct by police officers through the command’s emergency channels and Complaint Response Unit in Benin.

The investigation remains ongoing, with the police assuring the public that appropriate measures would be taken based on its findings.v
