How Tinubu, Atiku, Obi Stand in Southern States Ahead of 2027
As the 2027 presidential election approaches, attention has shifted to the political strength of President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi across Southern Nigeria.
Analysts are examining their influence, voter support and party structures in the South-West, South-East and South-South.
Tinubu, the incumbent and APC candidate, is seen as strongest in the South-West, his political base. The region includes Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti, where the ruling party maintains significant organisational advantage and incumbency influence. Projections suggest he is well-positioned to consolidate support there.
Peter Obi, now aligned with the Nigeria Democratic Congress, continues to command strong personal following in the South-East and parts of the South-South. His 2023 performance in these zones remains a key reference point, though party realignments and new political structures could affect the dynamics in 2027.
Atiku Abubakar, contesting under the African Democratic Congress, faces a tougher challenge in the South. While he previously enjoyed support in some South-South states, recent shifts and the presence of other southern candidates have complicated his path in the region.
Overall, the Southern political landscape appears competitive, with Tinubu leaning on regional identity and party machinery, Obi relying on grassroots appeal, and Atiku working to rebuild influence. The final outcome will depend on voter turnout, alliances and campaign effectiveness in the months ahead.
