Tinubu Intervenes in Zamfara APC Crisis, Eight Lawmakers Agree to Return to Party

President Bola Tinubu has intervened in the crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State, following a reconciliation meeting with eight state lawmakers who recently resigned from the ruling party.

The lawmakers met with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, in a move aimed at resolving their grievances and restoring unity within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting was facilitated by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, who led the legislators to the President alongside Aminu Sani Jaji, a member of the House of Representatives.

Following the meeting, the lawmakers reportedly reaffirmed their loyalty to Tinubu and expressed their willingness to return to the APC and work towards the party’s success in the forthcoming elections.

Matawalle also pledged to integrate the legislators into the Tinubu Again Movement, a political platform established to mobilise support for the President and other APC candidates ahead of the 2027 polls.

The lawmakers are Aliyu Ango Kagara, representing Talata Mafara South; Ibrahim Tukur Bakura, representing Bakura; Faruk Musa Dosara, representing Maradun I; Bashir Abubakar Masama, representing Bukkuyum North; Muktaru Nasiru Kaura, representing Kaura North; Nasiru Abdullahi, representing Maru North; Bashar Bello, representing Bungudu West; and Bashar Aliyu, representing Gummi I.

The legislators had announced their resignation from the APC earlier in October, citing alleged injustice, internal divisions within the party and concerns over worsening insecurity in rural communities across Zamfara State.

They also complained about the alleged non-payment of certain salaries, allowances and other entitlements.

Their departure raised concerns about the party’s cohesion in the state, with reports suggesting that some of the lawmakers were considering joining the African Democratic Congress.

However, the meeting with Tinubu appears to have opened a fresh path towards reconciliation, with the lawmakers indicating their readiness to work with the APC leadership.

The legislators had also been suspended by the Zamfara State House of Assembly in February 2024 over allegations of gross misconduct, conspiracy and holding an unauthorised sitting. The suspension was extended in May 2026.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki, had maintained that the disciplinary action preceded the lawmakers’ decision to leave the APC and was unrelated to their political affiliations.

The latest reconciliation effort comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the APC seeking to strengthen its structures and mobilise support across the country.

The lawmakers’ renewed engagement with the President and party leaders is expected to contribute to efforts to address the disagreements that led to their departure, although the resolution of their grievances will be central to sustaining the reconciliation.
