The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has outlined eight key steps new American citizens can take after completing the naturalisation process.

The guidance highlights practical actions ranging from obtaining a US passport and updating government records to sponsoring eligible relatives and exploring business opportunities.

According to USCIS, new citizens should consider the following:

1. Apply for a US passport: New citizens can apply for a passport through the US Department of State. The passport serves as official evidence of citizenship alongside the Certificate of Naturalisation.
2. Update Social Security records: Naturalised citizens are advised to notify the Social Security Administration of their new citizenship status and ensure their records are updated.
3. Sponsor eligible relatives: Citizens may petition for certain qualifying family members to obtain lawful permanent residence, subject to applicable eligibility and financial requirements.
4. Obtain citizenship documents for eligible children: Some children may automatically acquire US citizenship when a parent becomes naturalised. Eligible parents can apply for a Certificate of Citizenship to formally document the child’s status.
5. Register to vote: New citizens can register to vote through the appropriate state or federal channels. USCIS describes voting as both a right and responsibility of citizenship.
6. Replace a lost Certificate of Naturalisation: Citizens who lose, damage or otherwise need to replace their naturalisation certificate can apply for a replacement by filing Form N-565 with USCIS.
7. Update driving or state identification records: Citizens who change their name or address can update their driver’s licence or state identification information through their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles.
8. Explore business opportunities: New citizens interested in entrepreneurship can access support from the US Small Business Administration, including business counselling, financing resources and government contracting opportunities.

USCIS said the guidance is intended to help newly naturalised Americans understand the practical steps available to them and make use of the rights, responsibilities and opportunities associated with US citizenship.
