CBN May Retain Interest Rate as MPC Begins 306th Meeting

The Central Bank of Nigeria is expected to maintain its benchmark interest rate, the Monetary Policy Rate, at 26.50 percent as its Monetary Policy Committee concludes its two-day meeting on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.

Economic intelligence reports, financial analysts, and banking stakeholders widely project that the committee, chaired by Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Olayemi Cardoso, will keep policy parameters constant to assess evolving economic conditions and sustain disinflationary gains.

Several macroeconomic and geopolitical considerations heavily influence this retention outlook. Gross external reserves continue to show resilience, alongside stability in the foreign exchange market and steady domestic economic growth.

These factors provide sufficient support against external price pressures without requiring immediate rate hikes.

Headline inflation has shown signs of moderation, easing slightly to 15.91 percent and remaining within the central bank’s projected target tolerance band of 14.5 percent to 18.5 percent. Economists and industry experts from institutions such as the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria and Capital Market Academics of Nigeria note that previous aggressive tightening measures are still filtering through the financial system.

Additionally, heightened global geopolitical risks, particularly ongoing Middle East tensions affecting energy prices, make a cautious, data-driven hold stance the most prudent approach for the committee at this time.
