LASTMA Captures 38,000 Traffic Offenders in Second Quarter of 2026
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has recorded a significant number of traffic violations in the second quarter of the year. According to the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the agency’s Traffic Management Solution devices captured 38,000 vehicles for various offences during this period.
The authority also physically apprehended more than 3,000 vehicles for violations that disrupted the free flow of traffic.
The physical enforcement focused on issues such as indiscriminate parking, failure to use designated bus stops, driving against traffic, illegal use of the Bus Rapid Transit lane, and not wearing seat belts. Bakare-Oki explained that the agency is gradually shifting from physical enforcement to technology-driven methods to improve efficiency and coverage across the state.
Court papers were issued to the owners of the captured vehicles after sufficient evidence of violations was established. The cases were taken to the Lagos State Mobile Court, which has the authority to convict offenders or issue fines. Motorists who choose not to appear in court can complete a waiver form in LASTMA’s Legal Department and pay the prescribed penalty.
The General Manager urged the motoring public to be law-abiding and observe traffic rules at all times. He also mentioned that a joint enforcement operation involving several agencies is ongoing on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway as directed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The operation aims to clear trash, remove abandoned vehicles, and address other encumbrances on the road.
LASTMA’s efforts are part of broader initiatives to improve traffic management and ensure smoother movement in Lagos. The agency continues to encourage compliance with traffic regulations to reduce congestion and enhance road safety for all users.
The latest figures show a strong commitment to using both technology and physical presence to enforce traffic laws effectively.
