The Federal Government has warned against the use of force to resolve political disputes in the Republic of Niger. The statement followed reports of an attempted coup by soldiers within the country’s military forces.

Gunfire and explosions were heard in several parts of Niamey, the capital, early on Saturday. Attackers targeted the Diori Hamani International Airport, which houses an air force base and is located about 10 kilometres from the presidential palace. The assailants also reportedly tried to breach the security perimeter around the presidency.

It was the third attack on the airport this year. The ruling military junta confirmed that personnel within its forces had attempted to seize power but were repelled.

In a statement, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oluwafemi Adeniyi said Nigeria views the current political and security situation in Niger with deep concern. As a neighbour sharing close historical, fraternal and cultural ties, Nigeria desires peace, security, democracy and development in the country.

The government noted that a peaceful and stable Niger would have a positive impact on Nigeria, the sub-region and the Sahel. It urged the authorities and people of Niger to work towards an inclusive and participatory return to stability and constitutional order in the interest of regional peace.
