A nine-year-old pupil from Offa, Kwara State, Charlotte Muritala, is drawing attention online for using TikTok to teach mathematics to other children.

Charlotte, a JSS2 student, has been interested in mathematics since she was about five and now shares lessons on topics such as algebra, fractions and lowest common multiples through short videos.

Using a whiteboard, marker and smartphone, she breaks down mathematical problems into simple, step-by-step explanations aimed at helping young learners understand difficult concepts.

Speaking with Channels Television on Monday, Charlotte said her interest in the subject stemmed from her love for numbers.

She explained that she approaches difficult questions by breaking them into smaller parts before solving them.

According to her, when one method does not work, she tries another approach and works through the problem gradually until she finds a solution.

Charlotte said she considers mathematics enjoyable despite the challenges some questions may present.

“Mathematics is fun for me. Some questions are hard, but I like solving them,” she said.

Her online teaching began after her mother created a platform where she could share her knowledge with other children.

Charlotte said she was happy and proud to have an opportunity to teach other young learners through the platform.

Her father described her as highly committed to learning, saying mathematics and reading occupy a significant part of her time.

He, however, noted that Charlotte still enjoys normal childhood activities, including playing, despite her strong academic interest.

Her mathematics teacher also described her as an outstanding student with an exceptional interest in solving mathematical problems.

The teacher said Charlotte’s enthusiasm for the subject distinguishes her from many of her peers and urged greater investment in children who demonstrate exceptional academic abilities.

According to the teacher, such support should include access to qualified teachers, scholarships and adequate funding to help talented students develop their potential.

Despite the attention generated by her online lessons, descriptions of Charlotte as a “maths genius” remain largely social-media or media characterisations rather than the result of a formal assessment of exceptional intellectual ability.

Charlotte, meanwhile, encouraged children who struggle with mathematics not to give up, advising them to practise regularly, learn from their mistakes and remain persistent.
