IGP Disu Forges International Alliances to Combat AI-Driven Transnational Crimes
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called for deeper international police cooperation and stronger global alliances to counter the rising threat of crimes driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging digital technologies.
The police chief made these remarks at the Fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026) on Innovation and New Technologies in UN Policing, held at the UN Headquarters. Speaking to global law enforcement leaders, IGP Disu warned that transnational criminal networks are increasingly exploiting artificial intelligence, geospatial intelligence, encrypted communications, and highly sophisticated cyber-enabled fraud to bypass traditional policing models and target vulnerable communities across borders.
While acknowledging that these advanced digital tools present extraordinary opportunities for predictive policing and modernizing threat detection, Disu emphasized that technological integration must never compromise the bedrock principles of law enforcement. He noted that technological advancements should complement human judgment rather than replace it, asserting that innovation must ultimately strengthen transparency, accountability, and absolute respect for human rights and dignity.
The IGP further advocated for equitable access to digital capabilities and capacity-building resources across member states. He stressed that the future of global safety relies on genuine international cooperation to ensure that advanced security innovations do not remain the exclusive domain of technologically advanced nations, but are shared collectively to maintain global peace and the rule of law.
