Catholic Church Mourns Passing of Archbishop Augustine Akubeze at 69

The Catholic Church in Nigeria is in mourning following the demise of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin City, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze.

The respected prelate passed away on Thursday at the age of 69, leaving behind a legacy of service, humility, and dedication to the faith. His death has been described as a profound loss for the Church and the wider community he served for many years.

Archbishop Akubeze was known for his simple and humble lifestyle, always putting the needs of his flock first. He served as a father figure to many, offering guidance and support to both clergy and laypeople. His leadership in the Archdiocese of Benin City saw remarkable growth in pastoral care, education, and community development projects that touched countless lives.

Born in 1956, he was ordained a priest in 1987 and later appointed Bishop of Uromi before becoming Archbishop of Benin City in 2011. During his time as President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, he became a strong voice on national issues, speaking boldly about justice, peace, and good governance. His episcopal motto, “That I may bear witness to the Truth,” reflected his commitment to honesty and service.

Tributes have poured in from across the country, with many describing him as a compassionate shepherd and defender of the faith. The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria highlighted his passion for the welfare and formation of priests, believing that the future of the Church depended on well-trained shepherds.

His death marks the end of a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades in the priesthood.

Funeral arrangements for Archbishop Augustine Obiora Akubeze are expected to be announced soon by the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City. As the Church and his family mourn his passing, many are remembering his contributions and the positive impact he had on Nigerian society. His legacy of faith, humility, and service will continue to inspire generations to come.
