President Tinubu Mourns Political Mentor Alhaji Ganiyu Kolapo Oseni, Recalls Struggles for Democracy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of elder statesman and progressive politician, Alhaji Ganiyu Kolapo Oseni, describing him as the foundational mentor who originally brought him into the political arena and stood solidly by him throughout his career. Alhaji Oseni passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at the age of 80.

In an emotional tribute released by the Presidency, President Tinubu recounted that his relationship with Oseni went far beyond ordinary politics. He described the late statesman as a unique leader, ally, comrade, and brother who, alongside other key figures, guided his early political steps to successfully contest as a Senator for Lagos West in the Third Republic and subsequently as Governor of Lagos State in 1999.

Reflecting on their shared sacrifices, the President honored Oseni as a “warrior for democracy” who fought boldly against military dictatorship. He recalled their dangerous, collective struggle under the banner of the pro-democracy movement to validate the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election won by the late Bashorun Moshood Abiola.

Tinubu also shared a poignant personal memory from 2022, noting that when he declared his intention to run for the presidency, Oseni gave his blessing and prayers from the United States, where he had relocated. The President stated that his administration is currently implementing many of the reforms and ideas they brainstormed together over the years to build a stronger Nigeria.

Alhaji Ganiyu Kolapo Oseni leaves behind an indelible legacy in Lagos State and Nigerian political history. During the Second Republic, he served as the Organizing Secretary of Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in Lagos, where his strategic vision laid the foundation for essential state infrastructure, including the establishment of the Lagos State Printing Corporation.
