Opposition Party Demands Dismissal of Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila over PFIPC Agency Controversy
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for the immediate removal and suspension of the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.
The opposition party insists this action is vital to allow for an unbiased, independent investigation into a massive corruption scandal surrounding a highly disputed government body the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC).
The unfolding crisis stems from explosive claims made by Prince Mathew Adeniyi Adeyemi, who asserts he is the legitimately appointed Director-General of the PFIPC. The Presidency, however, has vehemently disowned the council, declaring that it is completely non-existent and that Adeyemi is an impostor operating an elaborate forgery and impersonation ring.
In a strongly worded statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC voiced deep alarm over the gravity of the situation. The party questioned how a purportedly “fictitious” agency managed to secure official allocations within the 2026 federal budget, gain authorization from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation for 314 staff positions, and successfully open multiple high-level accounts—including a Treasury Single Account (TSA), a domiciliary account, and a Pound Sterling account—directly with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The NDC argued that the stringent documentation normally required by the apex bank makes it highly improbable that a fake organization could secure these facilities without high-level internal collusion.
Adding fuel to the fire, the controversy involves severe personal accusations against the Chief of Staff:
* The Take-Off Grant Dispute: Adeyemi alleged that the falling out occurred because he flatly rejected demands from Gbajabiamila to surrender a 48% kickback from the agency’s ₦27.4 billion take-off grant.
* *The Alleged Sale of Office:* Adeyemi claimed he fraudulently secured his appointment by paying ₦400 million through intermediaries to the Chief of Staff’s office, with an outstanding balance of ₦200 million still owed.
* *The Mysterious Death & Safety Threats:* The scandal has taken a dark turn with references to the death of Babatunde Tanimola—an alleged intermediary who died in an Abuja hotel fire in October 2025—and claims by Adeyemi that he has survived multiple attempts on his life.
The Presidency, speaking through Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, has dismissed these claims as a “defense mechanism” by a criminal ring. The administration maintains that Gbajabiamila had absolutely no involvement and had actually petitioned security agencies as far back as October 2025 regarding Adeyemi’s alleged document forgery, which subsequently led to criminal charges.
Despite the government’s pushback, pressure continues to mount from other quarters. Former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, also publicly called for Gbajabiamila’s suspension, labeling him the “prime suspect” due to his role as the strict gatekeeper of the Presidential Villa.
The NDC is demanding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu move beyond routine defensive press releases by setting up an independent judicial panel of inquiry, ordering anti-graft agencies (the EFCC and ICPC) to thoroughly audit the central bank accounts, and providing immediate witness protection for Adeyemi to ensure the absolute truth is uncovered.
