FAAN Plans 25-Day Closure of Owerri Airport for Runway Repairs
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily shut the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, from October 20, 2026, for about 25 days to rehabilitate and extend its runway.
The proposed closure, which is subject to final confirmation, will allow the agency to undertake essential pavement repairs and resurfacing to address damage caused by prolonged use and recent heavy rainfall.
FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, disclosed this in a statement, explaining that sections of the runway had developed potholes and extensive surface cracks that required urgent attention.
According to the authority, the rehabilitation will involve repairing damaged pavement, treating cracks and resurfacing affected sections to restore the runway to a safer operational condition.
The project will also include extending the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as passenger and flight traffic to the region increases.
FAAN said the improvements were intended to enhance passenger comfort, support growing aviation demand and ensure more efficient airport operations, particularly ahead of the expected surge in travel during the Christmas season.
The authority advised passengers scheduled to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to contact their respective airlines for information on flight changes and alternative travel arrangements.
It added that it would continue consultations with relevant stakeholders and announce the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they had been finalised.
FAAN said the planned intervention formed part of its efforts to maintain safe, efficient and reliable airport operations.
