Georgian Parliamentarians Resort to Fisticuffs During Prime Minister’s Annual Report Presentstion
A physical altercation erupted in the Georgian parliament chamber during the final plenary sitting of the spring session, forcing an immediate suspension of the proceedings.
The confrontation broke out during a question-and-answer session following the annual government address delivered by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze. The dispute rapidly escalated from a heated verbal argument into a full fistfight between members of the ruling Georgian Dream party and lawmakers from the opposition Gakharia’s For Georgia party.
The physical skirmish began shortly after a critical speech by opposition Member of Parliament Giorgi Sharashidze. Tensions have been running high between the opposing factions, with opposition lawmakers increasingly accusing the Prime Minister and the ruling party of democratic backsliding and pulling Georgia away from its long-term path toward European Union membership.
Following the chaotic outbreak, parliamentary leaders halted live broadcasts and officially suspended the session to restore order.
