Court Reserves Ruling on Sowore’s Bail Application Until June 30

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed June 30, 2026, for ruling on an application by activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, seeking the restoration of his bail following its revocation by the court.

Justice Mohammed Umar scheduled the date after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and the defence on the application challenging the earlier decision to revoke Sowore’s bail and issue a bench warrant for his arrest.

The court had revoked Sowore’s bail after he failed to appear for a scheduled hearing in a case involving allegations of cybercrime and defamatory publications.

The prosecution argued that the activist’s absence amounted to a breach of the bail conditions granted by the court and urged the judge to take appropriate action to ensure his attendance.

Sowore’s legal team, however, contended that his absence was neither deliberate nor intended to obstruct the proceedings.

The defence maintained that the activist had communicated his circumstances and remained committed to defending himself against the charges.

During the hearing, counsel to Sowore urged the court to set aside the bench warrant and restore the bail earlier granted, arguing that the circumstances surrounding his absence did not justify the revocation.

The defence further submitted that denying the application could infringe on the defendant’s constitutional rights and hamper his ability to prepare for trial.

The prosecution opposed the request, insisting that the court’s earlier decision was justified and necessary to preserve the integrity of the judicial process.

The case has continued to attract widespread public interest, with civil society groups and political associates of Sowore closely monitoring developments.

Supporters of the activist have criticized the revocation of his bail, while government lawyers insist that all defendants must comply with court orders regardless of status or public profile.

After listening to submissions from both parties, Justice Umar adjourned proceedings and reserved ruling on the bail application until June 30.

The court’s decision is expected to determine the next phase of the trial and clarify Sowore’s legal status as proceedings continue.
