A student at a high school in the Philippines shot a classmate dead before taking his own life on Tuesday, authorities said. The incident was livestreamed on social media and took place at Ateneo de Zamboanga University, a Catholic private school in western Mindanao.

According to regional police, the ninth-grade suspect entered the victim’s classroom, opened fire, then went to the fifth floor of the building and shot himself.

Interior Secretary, Victor Remulla confirmed that the shooter had streamed the attack online before the Facebook account was disabled.

In the circulated video, a gun is seen moving through a hallway before being pointed into a classroom and fired. Students in uniform can then be heard screaming as they rush toward an exit. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured.

National police said they were working to establish the motive, determine the source of the firearm, and find out how it was brought onto the campus. The ages of the shooter and the victim have not yet been released.

School authorities expressed deep sadness over the two fatalities and said they were cooperating fully with the investigation. School shootings remain rare in the Philippines, though a previous attack in June left three students dead and several others wounded.
