Nigeria to Deliver 22 Million Fertiliser Bags in 2026 to Boost Food Security, Assures Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has announced that Nigeria will deliver about 22 million bags of fertiliser in 2026 as part of efforts to strengthen food security and improve agricultural output across the country.
The initiative, which translates to roughly 1.1 million metric tonnes of fertiliser, is aimed at supporting farmers, boosting crop production, and reducing pressure on food prices amid ongoing economic challenges.
President Tinubu said the Federal Government has already secured large quantities of fertiliser inputs ahead of the 2026 farming season, with hundreds of thousands of metric tonnes either delivered or in transit.
He added that the administration is working to ensure steady supply through improved procurement and logistics systems. According to him, the programme is part of wider agricultural reforms designed to protect farmers from global supply disruptions and rising fertiliser costs, while also strengthening local production capacity.
The government also noted that Nigeria now has expanded fertiliser blending capacity, with several operational plants across the country contributing to domestic production and reducing reliance on imports.
Officials say the fertiliser distribution plan will support smallholder farmers nationwide and focus on key staple crops such as rice, maize, cassava, and soybean.
The initiative is expected to play a significant role in improving yields and advancing the country’s food security agenda.
Tinubu reaffirmed that agriculture remains central to the administration’s economic strategy, stressing that investments in input supply, modern farming practices, and farmer support systems will continue in the coming years.
