Lagos Nabs Over 15 for Collecting, Reselling Used Disposable Plastics, Plates to Food Vendors

Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, popularly known as KAI, have apprehended more than 15 suspected environmental offenders in a targeted enforcement operation carried out around the Jibowu railway corridor in Lagos.

According to the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who disclosed the development on his verified X account, the suspects were arrested for allegedly collecting used disposable plastics and plates from refuse bins and reselling them to food vendors a practice authorities say poses a grave public health risk to unsuspecting members of the public.

The operation, which took place along the Jibowu railway corridor, reflects the Lagos State Government’s intensifying crackdown on environmental and sanitation violations across the state.

The corridor, which has long been a concern for environmental regulators, was the scene of the enforcement exercise that led to the arrests.

The act of recovering discarded single-use plastics and plates from waste bins for resale to food vendors is considered a serious health hazard, as such items already used and contaminated could expose consumers to harmful bacteria and other disease-causing agents when reused for food service.

Commissioner Wahab, who has been at the forefront of the state’s environmental enforcement drive, shared the update under the hashtag #ZeroToleranceLagos, signalling the administration’s continued commitment to maintaining sanitation standards and protecting public health across the state.

The arrests are the latest in a series of enforcement actions by Lagos State authorities aimed at ridding the commercial hub of unhygienic and environmentally harmful practices.
