Federal Government Unveils Eight Gun Trucks for Mining Marshals, Vows to Prosecute Saboteurs
The Federal Government on Wednesday reaffirmed its support for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals, unveiling eight operational gun trucks to intensify the crackdown on illegal mining.
Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, issued the warning during the inauguration ceremony at the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja. He declared that any individual or group attempting to undermine, harass, or blackmail the unit would face prosecution for economic sabotage.
“The Mining Marshals have recorded significant successes in curbing illegal mining operations and protecting the nation’s mineral resources. It is therefore not surprising that those who have profited from illegality are uncomfortable with their achievements,” Mr Alake stated, condemning campaigns of blackmail and misinformation.
“Anyone, whether a uniformed personnel or a civilian, who seeks to frustrate the noble work of these Mining Marshals is an economic saboteur and will be treated as such. That I can promise you,” the minister declared.
Mr Alake further assured that additional technological equipment and armoured vehicles would be provided once budgetary approvals are secured, and reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to repositioning the solid minerals sector for economic diversification.
Since their establishment two years ago, the Mining Marshals have arrested more than 300 illegal miners, prosecuted over 150 suspects, and secured multiple convictions involving both Nigerian and foreign nationals, the minister noted.
Deputy Commandant General Zakari Ibrahim Ningi, representing NSCDC Commandant General Ahmed Audi, accepted the vehicles and pledged they would be deployed effectively to support enforcement operations nationwide.
