The United States Mission in Nigeria has reminded American citizens that they must enter and leave the United States using a valid US passport.

This rule applies to all US citizens, including dual nationals and children.
Dual citizens cannot use their foreign passports to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization. The Department of Homeland Security regularly denies or cancels such applications from dual nationals.

US citizens living abroad who plan to travel to America are advised to ensure their US passports are valid before the trip. Those whose passports have expired or will soon expire should renew them early.

Many countries also require passports to have at least six months of validity remaining. Travellers are urged to check this requirement to avoid problems at airports.

The reminder is aimed at preventing travel disruptions and ensuring smooth entry into the United States. Dual nationals are encouraged to prepare their documents well ahead of any planned journey.
