Kwara Records Lowest Intercity Bus Fare in Nigeria as Transport Costs Ease
Kwara State recorded the lowest average cost of intercity bus travel in Nigeria in April 2026, according to newly released data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The data, published by StatiSense and sourced from the NBS, showed that passengers in Kwara paid an average of ₦7,900 per intercity bus journey during the month, the lowest figure among the states surveyed. Edo State followed closely with an average fare of ₦7,953, while Bayelsa ranked third at ₦8,208.
Other states with relatively low intercity transport costs included Bauchi (₦8,579), Ebonyi (₦8,677), Yobe (₦8,687), Benue (₦8,767), Adamawa (₦8,893), Anambra (₦8,987), Oyo (₦9,039), Kano (₦9,300) and Gombe (₦9,408).
The figures indicate that average intercity bus fares in the listed states remained below ₦10,000 during the review period, suggesting comparatively lower transportation costs than in many other parts of the country.
A regional breakdown of the rankings showed that the North Central geopolitical zone accounted for three states on the list—Kwara, Benue and Adamawa—while the North East and South South zones also recorded three states each among the lowest-cost locations.
The North East was represented by Bauchi, Yobe and Gombe, while the South South zone featured Edo and Bayelsa. The South East had two states—Ebonyi and Anambra—while the South West was represented by Oyo. Kano was the only state from the North West geopolitical zone to make the list.
Transport analysts note that intercity bus fares are often influenced by factors such as fuel prices, road conditions, distance between major commercial centres and passenger demand.
The NBS regularly tracks transport costs across the country as part of its efforts to monitor price movements and economic conditions affecting households and businesses.
