The leadership of the Nigerian Senate on Thursday visited President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where both arms of government reaffirmed their commitment to closer cooperation on matters affecting the country. 

The engagement, which took place behind closed doors, was aimed at strengthening governance and deepening collaboration between the executive and the National Assembly.

The Senate delegation was led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and included Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, and Senator Osita Bonaventure Izunaso, who represents Imo West. The lawmakers met with the president, who also doubles as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to discuss issues described as being of national importance.

Details of the meeting were made public shortly afterward through a statement from Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele on his official social media handle. Speaking after the engagement, Senate President Akpabio commended Tinubu’s leadership and reaffirmed the National Assembly’s readiness to work hand in hand with the executive in pursuit of national development. He also pushed back against suggestions of friction between the two arms of government, insisting that lawmakers were elected to collaborate with the executive rather than engage in needless confrontation.

According to him, elected representatives in the Senate and House of Representatives were not sent to Abuja to fight, but to work in a bipartisan spirit for the benefit of the country.

Akpabio further stressed that continued cooperation between the legislature and the executive remains essential for effective governance, even as the National Assembly maintains its constitutional responsibility of oversight. The meeting comes against the backdrop of ongoing efforts by the presidency to keep communication channels open with the leadership of the National Assembly on pressing national matters, ranging from security to economic policy, as the administration continues to push its legislative agenda through the Senate.
