Wabara Urges Opposition Unity Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara has called on Nigeria’s opposition parties to unite in the interest of national development, warning that disunity among them could weaken democracy and governance in the country.

Wabara made the call in a statement on Monday, expressing concern over the current state of the nation and the need for a stronger, more coordinated opposition to provide credible alternatives to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The elder statesman, who serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said opposition leaders must set aside personal ambitions and political differences to focus on the broader national interest.

According to him, Nigeria is facing serious challenges, including economic hardship, insecurity and rising cost of living, which require collective effort and responsible leadership to address.

He argued that a fragmented opposition would be unable to effectively hold the government accountable or offer Nigerians a viable alternative.

Wabara stressed that democracy thrives on a vibrant opposition, noting that the absence of unity among opposition parties could lead to a weakening of democratic institutions.

He warned against any trend that could push the country towards a one-party system, describing such a development as dangerous for Nigeria’s political future.

He further urged opposition stakeholders to prioritise dialogue, reconciliation and coalition-building ahead of the 2027 general elections, adding that unity would strengthen their chances of presenting a formidable challenge to the ruling party.

Political analysts say Wabara’s remarks reflect growing concerns within opposition circles over internal divisions and the need to build consensus as the next election cycle approaches.
