NDC Confirms Nationwide Primaries for May 29
The Nigeria Democratic Congress has confirmed that its presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state assembly primaries will hold nationwide on May 29, despite logistical challenges caused by the Eid-el-Kabir holidays.
The party announced the decision in a statement signed by its National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, and National Secretary, Barrister Ikenna Alex-Morgan Enekweizu.
According to the statement, the primaries were initially scheduled for May 28 and 29, but disruptions linked to the public holidays, including transportation difficulties and flight unavailability, affected the movement of aspirants and screening officials.
The party said many aspirants who travelled to Abuja for screening exercises, alongside members of the screening committee, were unable to return to their states due to the travel situation.
As a result, May 28 will now be used for arrivals, documentation with the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies, consultative meetings and other preparatory activities ahead of the primaries.
The party added that stakeholders, party elders and aspirants in various states would also hold meetings on May 28 before the conduct of the primaries the following day.
The NDC directed that no government agency, including the police, the Department of State Services and INEC, should participate in any meetings or programmes scheduled for May 28, warning that activities outside the approved guidelines would be regarded as illegal and unauthorised.
According to the party, the sequence of the May 29 primaries will begin with presidential affirmation, followed by National Assembly, state assembly and governorship primaries or affirmations.
It added that all results would be collated by designated teams and forwarded to the party’s national headquarters, where the National Working Committee would officially announce the outcomes.
The party also stated that no state executive or committee has been authorised to declare results independently.
The NDC urged aspirants, party members and supporters to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the exercise, stressing that it has zero tolerance for violence, disorderly conduct and hooliganism.
