Tinubu Says He Shares Nigerians’ Hardship Under Economic Reforms

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday admitted that Nigerians have faced hardship as a result of his administration’s economic reforms, stating that he has also personally felt the impact of the sacrifices required by the policies.

Tinubu made the remarks in Abuja shortly after emerging as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 general election following the party’s nationwide primary.

Speaking at the Bola Tinubu International Conference Centre, the President said the reforms introduced by his administration were necessary to rebuild the country’s economy despite the challenges citizens have experienced.

According to him, the burden of the reforms has not been carried by Nigerians alone.

“I know what it takes to reform this nation we met in tatters. If you lost sleep, I’ve lost some too. If you’ve lost weight, I’ve lost some too,” Tinubu said.

The President maintained that he remains committed to implementing the policies because Nigerians entrusted him with the responsibility of leading the country.

He recalled that he willingly sought the office during the 2023 election and therefore must fulfil the mandate given to him.

Tinubu also formally accepted the APC presidential ticket and thanked party members for granting him another opportunity to contest for the nation’s highest office in 2027.

Reflecting on the conduct of the primary election, the President said he monitored events across the country after casting his vote in Lagos on Saturday.

He described the turnout of party supporters in several states as impressive and commended the peaceful atmosphere during the exercise.

According to him, the absence of violence and political tension during the primary reflected the kind of democratic culture Nigeria should embrace.

Tinubu emerged winner of the APC presidential primary after polling 10,999,162 votes in the direct primary conducted across the country’s 774 local government areas and 8,809 wards.

His challenger, Stanley Osifo, secured 16,503 votes, after which the party officially presented Tinubu with its flag as candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
