Political Sacrifice and Payback: How Tinubu’s 1993 Decision Shaped Nigeria’s Leadership
Political sacrifice, the act of subordinating personal ambition for a collective goal, is a recurring theme in Nigeria’s recent political history. These decisions have often reshaped the nation’s leadership trajectory. This report examines key instances where political figures deferred personal aspirations for a larger cause, focusing on Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his political protégé, Femi Gbajabiamila.
After his election to the Senate in 1992, there were indications that Bola Tinubu could have become Senate President. However, such a move would have positioned Tinubu, a fellow southerner, as a political obstacle to MKO Abiola’s presidential ambitions.
Demonstrating political foresight, Tinubu chose to support Abiola. He was instrumental in persuading other aspirants, including Atiku Abubakar, to step aside for Abiola during the SDP primary elections. Tinubu played a key role as the chief lobbyist and mobiliser for the pro-democracy cause within the Senate, and when the results were annulled, he became a prominent financier and activist for the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), working to restore the mandate. His commitment came at great personal cost as his house was bombed and he was forced into exile.
Years later, the concept of sacrifice emerged again. After multiple electoral defeats, Muhammadu Buhari was said to be publicly despondent about his political future.
In a strategic move, Tinubu traveled to Kaduna in June 2012, and again in July 2014, to build a personal alliance with Buhari. This culminated in Tinubu agreeing to set aside his own presidential ambition and support Buhari as the candidate of the newly formed All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015. This decision necessitated that Tinubu relinquish his own vice-presidential aspirations, paving the way for Yemi Osinbajo as the running mate.
The theme of sacrifice in Nigerian politics came full circle in the lead-up to the 2023 elections. Tinubu, who had stepped aside for Buhari in 2015, was the APC’s presidential candidate. Political allies who had supported him were now called upon to show similar loyalty.
Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, a close political ally from Tinubu’s Lagos base, was at a crossroads. He had effectively ceded his ambition to continue as Speaker of the House in the 10th National Assembly. In what many saw as a “political thrift” being repaid, Gbajabiamila stepped aside from the speakership race to support the party’s directives and eventually became Chief of Staff to President Tinubu, echoing Tinubu’s past sacrifices for Abiola and Buhari.
