Osun Trains Teachers to Fight FGM and Promote Sex Education

The Osun State Government, in partnership with a non-governmental organisation, has organised a special training programme for secondary school teachers. The three-day workshop focused on Comprehensive Sexuality Education and ways to prevent Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). A total of 45 teachers from both public and private schools across the state took part in the exercise held in Osogbo.

The training was supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) under a joint programme aimed at ending FGM. Teachers were equipped with knowledge and skills to teach students about sexual health, the dangers of FGM, and how to protect themselves.

They are expected to pass on what they learned by forming school clubs and educating more students, especially girls.

Officials explained that teachers play a vital role because they spend a lot of time with young people. By training them, the programme can reach many more students instead of training only a few directly. Participants were encouraged to treat their students like their own children and create safe spaces for open discussions on these important topics.

This initiative has already contributed to a significant drop in FGM cases in Osun State. Organisers expressed hope that with continued efforts, the harmful practice can be completely eradicated by 2030. They also urged residents to report anyone still involved in FGM to the authorities.

The programme highlights the state’s commitment to protecting young girls and promoting healthy living. Many see it as a positive step towards better sexual health education and ending harmful traditions. Teachers who attended are now expected to make a real impact in their various schools.
