2027: Kwankwaso Eyes NDC VP Ticket Amid Opposition Realignment
A former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed optimism about securing the vice-presidential ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso made this known during a recent media interaction in Kano, where he hinted at ongoing political negotiations within the emerging opposition coalition.
He described the potential vice-presidential slot as a strategic opportunity not only for his political career but also for Kano State and the broader Northern region.
The development comes amid growing momentum within the NDC, which has attracted key political figures seeking to form a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Notably, former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, is widely speculated to be the party’s leading presidential aspirant following indications that the NDC may zone its presidential ticket to the South while allocating the vice-presidential position to the North.
Political analysts say such an arrangement could position Kwankwaso as a strong contender for the running mate role, given his influence in the North-West and his established political structure.
Kwankwaso further described the anticipated ticket as a potential pathway to greater political inclusion for the North, urging his supporters to remain committed to the NDC’s vision ahead of the 2027 elections.
The evolving alliance between Obi and Kwankwaso, often referred to in political circles as a strategic partnership, is already generating conversations across the country.
Observers believe it could reshape voting patterns if formalised, particularly by consolidating support bases in both the South-East and Northern regions.
However, despite the growing optimism, party insiders note that final decisions on candidacies will depend on internal consultations, zoning agreements, and consensus among stakeholders within the NDC.
As political activities gradually intensify ahead of 2027, the race for key positions within emerging coalitions like the NDC is expected to further redefine Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
