Sokoto Government Approves ₦1.4 Billion for Deputy Governor’s Office Vehicles

The Sokoto State Government has approved the sum of ₦1.4 billion for the procurement of operational vehicles for the office of the Deputy Governor.

This approval was finalized during a State Executive Council meeting aimed at addressing administrative logistics and the enhancement of official operations within the state’s executive arm.

The State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Sambo Bello Danchadi, explained that the decision was necessary due to the deteriorating condition of the current fleet. According to the commissioner, the existing vehicles have become obsolete and increasingly expensive to maintain, which has hindered the ability of the Deputy Governor’s office to carry out essential oversight functions and field assignments across the state’s various local governments.

This allocation was part of a broader set of approvals totaling several billion naira, which also covered critical sectors such as rural electrification, school renovations, and the completion of township road projects.

The government emphasized that while these administrative upgrades are happening, significant funds are also being directed toward improving infrastructure and educational facilities to ensure a balanced approach to state development.

The announcement has generated mixed reactions, with some residents and analysts questioning the scale of the expenditure. Critics have argued that the funds could be more effectively utilized for direct social welfare programs or economic relief initiatives to support citizens facing financial hardships. They have called for more transparency in the procurement process to ensure the state receives maximum value for such a substantial investment.

In defense of the move, the state government maintained that the purchase is a standard institutional requirement to ensure the functionality of the second-highest office in the state. Officials noted that the vehicles are long-term state assets designed to serve the office through the current administration and beyond, ultimately supporting more effective governance and service delivery for the people of Sokoto.
