Seven Arraigned for Paid Thuggery, Looting at Kano GSM Market
The Kano State Police Command has arraigned seven suspects before a Magistrate Court in Nomansland, Kano, following a violent assault and looting at the Farm Centre GSM Market.
The suspects were brought before the court after series of tactical operations led to the apprehension of additional key participants. Among those recently arrested are Sadiq Ayuba and Abdulganiyu Abba, both residents of the state capital, who were identified through ongoing intelligence gathering.
During police interrogation, 18-year-old Sadiq Ayuba reportedly confessed that the group was mobilized and funded by a sponsor to launch the attack. The primary target of the violence was allegedly the entourage of a prominent political figure, A.A. Zaura, who was visiting the commercial hub at the time.
The assailants used the resulting chaos as a cover to vandalize shops and loot expensive mobile devices, leaving many traders with significant financial losses.
The charges filed against the seven individuals include criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, and unlawful assembly while armed with deadly weapons. The prosecution also detailed counts of mischief related to the destruction of property, including the vandalization of a Toyota ambulance and a tricycle. These charges highlight the severity of the incident, which temporarily paralyzed one of the busiest electronic markets in Northern Nigeria.
The State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, has reassured the public that the command remains on high alert to prevent further acts of thuggery in the state’s commercial districts.
While seven suspects are currently in custody, a manhunt is still underway for the alleged mastermind, identified as Mallam Hassan, and other fleeing accomplices. The police have emphasized that they will not tolerate the use of hired thugs to disrupt the peace and economic stability of the state.
The trial magistrate ordered the suspects to be remanded in a correctional facility pending further hearing of the case.
Meanwhile, security has been significantly beefed up around the Farm Centre area and other major markets in Kano to restore confidence among traders and customers. This legal action is seen as a crucial step toward addressing the rising concerns over political thuggery and its impact on the local economy.
