Ooni Installs Yoruba Council Leader as Sooko Agoriesin in Ile-Ife
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has conferred the title of Sooko Agoriesin on the President of the Yoruba Council Worldwide, Aare Oladotun Hassan, during a ceremony held over the weekend in Ile-Ife.
Details of the installation were disclosed in a statement issued by the palace’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Otunba Moses Olafare. The rites took place at Wanikin House and the Ogbooru Amodo Ruling House, where traditional priests and custodians of Yoruba culture conducted rituals in line with established customs.
According to the palace, the Sooko Agoriesin title occupies an important position within the Ile-Ife traditional structure and is associated with loyalty, courage, service, and the preservation of Yoruba heritage.
Speaking after the ceremony, Hassan expressed gratitude for the honour, describing his elevation as a call to greater responsibility. He reaffirmed his allegiance to the Ooni and pledged to serve the Yoruba people and humanity.
He noted that the role carries both prestige and duty within the palace hierarchy, historically functioning as a close aide to the Ooni, while emphasizing that ultimate authority remains with the monarch.
Hassan also outlined priorities including the promotion of peace, cultural values, youth development, and humanitarian initiatives, adding that he intends to uphold the legacy of service and generosity linked to the title.
In his remarks, the Ooni urged the new titleholder to maintain the dignity of the office and remain committed to service. He commended Hassan’s contributions to cultural advocacy, youth mobilisation, and broader national development.
The event drew traditional leaders, palace officials, members of the Yoruba Council Worldwide, and other dignitaries from across the country.
