FG Seeks Collaborative Front to Combat Disinformation Menace

The Federal Government of Nigeria has called for a unified global and local front to combat the rising tide of disinformation and misinformation, which it describes as a significant threat to national security and social cohesion. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized that the spread of fake news has become a sophisticated tool for destabilization that requires more than just a legislative response.

During a high-level engagement, Idris highlighted that the digital era has empowered malicious actors to manipulate public perception with ease. He noted that the government’s efforts to promote transparency are often undermined by coordinated campaigns of calumny designed to incite unrest. To counter this, the government is seeking a strategic partnership with tech giants, traditional media, and civil society organizations to ensure the digital space remains a safe environment for discourse.

Key elements of the proposed joint action include the development of a robust national framework for fact-checking and a rapid response system to address viral falsehoods. The Minister also announced the launch of a Media and Information Literacy Institute, an initiative aimed at strengthening the ability of citizens to identify and verify credible sources. This move is intended to build a more resilient public that can resist the influence of manipulated narratives.

The government maintains that while it is committed to upholding the fundamental right to freedom of speech, that right does not extend to the deliberate fabrication of lies that put lives at risk. Officials warned that the consequences of unchecked misinformation, particularly during sensitive political or economic periods, could lead to irreversible damage to the nation’s democratic fabric.

Industry experts and representatives from various media guilds have acknowledged the gravity of the situation but urged the government to ensure that any measures taken do not morph into a crackdown on legitimate dissent.

The ongoing dialogue underscores the critical need for a balance between safeguarding the information space and protecting constitutional liberties, ensuring that the fight against disinformation remains transparent.

As the political landscape evolves toward 2027, the Federal Government insists that the battle against disinformation is a collective responsibility. It has called on every Nigerian to be a gatekeeper of truth, stressing that the integrity of the nation’s public discourse is essential for long-term stability. By filling the “information vacuum” that often breeds rumors, the ministry hopes to reduce the overall susceptibility of the public to digital manipulation.
