Anambra SDP Set to Welcome 23 ADC Defectors as Internal Crisis Fractures Opposition

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is set to expand its footprint in Anambra State following the announcement that 23 prominent members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are finalizing their move to the party.

The Anambra State Chairman of the SDP, Festus Igwinagu, confirmed the development, noting that the defectors include high-ranking party officials and strategic stakeholders.

Igwinagu stated that the official reception for the defectors is scheduled to take place at the SDP state secretariat in Awka. He emphasized that the influx of new members is a testament to the party’s growing appeal and its commitment to providing a credible alternative to the current political status quo in the state.

The mass defection is reportedly fueled by the ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC at the national level, which has created a sense of uncertainty among its members. By joining the SDP, the defectors aim to find a more stable and unified platform to pursue their political aspirations ahead of the upcoming electoral cycles.

According to the SDP chairman, the new members are not just coming alone but are expected to bring thousands of their supporters from various local government areas across Anambra. This surge in membership is seen as a strategic boost for the SDP as it prepares to contest for key positions in future elections.

Igwinagu welcomed the defectors, assuring them of a level playing field within the SDP. He remarked that the party operates on the principles of equity and justice, stating, “Our doors are open to those who truly desire to serve the people and bring about positive change in Anambra State.”

The SDP leadership in the state has already begun integrating the newcomers into its structures to ensure a seamless transition. Strategic meetings are being held to align the visions of the existing members and the defectors, focusing on a unified front to challenge the dominance of the ruling parties in the region.

Political analysts suggest that this movement of politicians could significantly alter the political landscape in Anambra. The SDP, which has historically maintained a presence in the state, is positioning itself to capitalize on the fragmentation of other opposition parties to build a more formidable coalition.

With the formal reception ceremony expected to draw a large crowd of party faithful, the SDP is eager to showcase its newfound strength. The chairman concluded that this is only the beginning of a political realignment that will eventually see the party become the leading voice for the people of Anambra.
