Obi Demands Tinubu Account For Subsidy Savings, Loans

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for the resources available to his government, including the N15.8 trillion reportedly saved from the removal of the petrol subsidy and more than $100 billion in loans.

He said Nigerians deserve to know how the money has improved their lives.

Obi made the demand in a statement posted on his X handle on Saturday, titled Good Day, Mr President: Nigerians Deserve Accountability. He urged Tinubu to use his visit to Akwa Ibom State as an opportunity to explain how his administration has managed the country resources.

He began by congratulating the President on spending a night in a state outside Lagos and Abuja. He said, I congratulate you on spending a night in one of Nigeria states outside Lagos and Abuja. I hope you enjoyed the warmth, hospitality, and delicious cuisine of Akwa Ibom. He expressed hope that the visit would encourage him to travel to other parts of the country and engage with Nigerians.

Obi said he sincerely hopes the visit will inspire Tinubu to travel to the remaining 33 states of the federation, spend time with the people and, more importantly, explain what his administration has done with the N15.8 trillion saved from the removal of fuel subsidy, the over $100 billion he has borrowed, the increased revenues accruing to the government from taxing Nigerians, and the additional government revenues which his administration celebrated last year as having surpassed its target.

He also questioned the President foreign travels, alleging that Tinubu had spent over 260 days outside Nigeria since assuming office. He said Nigerians deserve answers on how those resources have translated into improvements in their living conditions, particularly in poverty reduction, education, healthcare, electricity and national security.

He asked specifically, Nigerians deserve to know how many that were pulled out of poverty within this period, how many out of school children were returned to school, and how many functional primary healthcare centres you have built. He recalled Tinubu campaign remark that voters should not back him if he failed to fix power, and asked for an account of electricity supply improvement.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party, finishing third with about 6.1 million votes. His statement comes about two months before Nigeria next presidential election, scheduled for January 16, 2027. He concluded, Mr President, Nigerians deserve answers. They deserve to know what has been done with the resources entrusted to your government.
