Police Recover Explosives at Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre

The Nigeria Police Force in Akwa Ibom State has recovered explosive devices from the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre, preventing what officials described as a potential security breach.

Police spokesperson Timfon John disclosed this in a statement issued in Uyo on Monday, stating that the discovery followed intelligence provided by correctional authorities regarding suspicious items within the facility.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, ordered the immediate deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit alongside other tactical teams to secure the area.

A joint search operation led to the recovery of two 90mm high-explosive rounds and a length of burning fuse, as well as tools including pincers, a screwdriver, chisels and a conduit pipe.

The police said the EOD team successfully neutralised the explosives, averting possible casualties and damage to infrastructure within the custodial facility.

Security has since been tightened around the centre, with increased surveillance, access restrictions and patrols introduced to prevent further threats.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the origin of the materials and identify those responsible.

The police assured residents that the situation is under control and confirmed that no injuries were recorded, while urging the public to report any suspicious activity.

The command also warned that it would take decisive action against individuals attempting to compromise public safety in the state.
