Lagos Govt Denies Report of Sanwo-Olu’s Forced Resignation

The Lagos State Government has dismissed reports alleging that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been asked to resign over health concerns, describing the claim as false.

In a statement issued on Monday, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, said the report published by Sahara Reporters was entirely inaccurate and should be disregarded.

Akosile stated that the governor remains in good health and continues to carry out his official duties, adding that no directive has been given for him to step down.

The clarification followed claims that Mr Sanwo-Olu was under pressure to resign, with Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat expected to assume office amid alleged succession plans ahead of the 2027 elections.

The state government rejected the allegations, describing them as misinformation capable of misleading the public.

Earlier on Monday, Hamzat visited the governor at Lagos House, Marina, in what officials described as a routine meeting to formally inform him of his intention to contest the governorship in 2027.

According to Akosile, the meeting was cordial and part of ongoing political consultations within the state.

During the meeting, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed support for his deputy’s ambition, describing him as qualified and experienced to lead the state.

He said the endorsement was based on Hamzat’s performance in office and their working relationship over the years.

The development comes as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Lagos State, with the endorsement expected to influence internal dynamics within the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Sanwo-Olu also referenced the role of President Bola Tinubu in shaping the state’s political structure, describing the current developments as part of a broader leadership continuity.

The state government reiterated its position that the governor remains fully in office, urging the public to ignore unverified reports regarding his health or tenure.
