Police Arrest, Transfer Officer to Force Headquarters Over Effurun Suspect Killing

The Delta State Police Command has taken decisive action following the extra-judicial killing of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun on April 26, 2026.

The incident occurred when police operatives were deployed to apprehend the deceased, who had been accused of attempting to transport a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and ammunition.

According to reports, the police officer leading the operation, ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his firearm in violation of Force Order 237 and standard operational procedures, resulting in the suspect’s death. The Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, has strongly condemned the act, characterizing it as a clear violation of professional conduct and human rights.

Upon learning of the incident, the Commissioner immediately ordered the arrest of ASP Usman. The officer was initially transferred to the State Headquarters in Asaba for disciplinary inquiries and has since been moved to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. He is now set to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for formal sanctioning and prosecution.

The Police Command has reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law. Officials emphasized that the organization maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding lawlessness, recklessness, and any form of extra-judicial conduct by its personnel, stressing the importance of maintaining public trust.

In a statement addressing the tragedy, Commissioner Oyeniyi expressed his sincere condolences to the family of the late Mene Ogidi. He assured the bereaved family that the Command is dedicated to ensuring that justice is fully served in the matter, reaffirming that the investigation will be handled with the necessary seriousness.
