Nigerian Group Calls FG, African Leaders to Act over South Africa Xenophobic Attacks
The Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa has called on the Federal Government and African leaders to urgently intervene in what it described as ongoing xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals in South Africa.
NICASA President, Frank Onyekwelu, made the appeal in a statement on Monday, citing repeated cases of harassment, intimidation, and killings affecting Nigerians and other Africans.
He expressed concern over alleged targeted attacks and instances of police brutality, warning that the situation could escalate if not promptly addressed.
Onyekwelu urged President Bola Tinubu and relevant government institutions to take decisive action to protect Nigerians living abroad.
He also appealed to key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, and the National Assembly, to respond with urgency through diplomatic engagement with South African authorities.
According to him, the safety of Nigerian citizens overseas is both a constitutional responsibility and a moral duty, adding that delayed responses could create the impression of neglect.
The NICASA president further called for the establishment of a transparent system to document and address cases of abuse and xenophobic violence, as well as ensure accountability for erring law enforcement officials.
He noted that Nigerians in South Africa contribute economically and socially, stressing that negative stereotyping and collective blame should be discouraged.
Onyekwelu also acknowledged the efforts of the Nigerian Consul-General in South Africa, Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, while calling for increased governmental support.
He urged African leaders and the African Union to work collectively to tackle rising intra-African hostility, describing xenophobia as a threat to continental unity and development.
NICASA advised Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm, law-abiding, and vigilant while diplomatic efforts continue to address the situation.
