NiMet Alerts Citizens to Impending Thunderstorms, Disruptions
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a nationwide weather alert, warning of thunderstorms, gusty winds, and potential disruptions to daily activities on Monday, April 20, 2026.
In a weather outlook released on Sunday, the agency advised Nigerians to prepare for a shift from hot morning temperatures to volatile atmospheric conditions by the afternoon and evening.
According to the forecast, the northern region will begin the day with hot and sunny conditions. However, isolated thunderstorms are expected later in the day, particularly in states like Taraba. NiMet noted that these storms may be accompanied by brief atmospheric disturbances and strong winds, which could impact outdoor plans and visibility.
In the North-Central region, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, and Nasarawa, a calm and warm morning is projected to give way to significant weather changes. The agency warned that while some areas will experience direct rainfall, others may face intense gusty winds without immediate precipitation.
Residents in these areas are encouraged to plan their outdoor engagements early to avoid the late-day surge in storm activity.
The southern region, including Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Enugu, Anambra, Rivers, and Delta, is expected to see the most intensified storm activity. NiMet warned of wet conditions, frequent lightning, and potential disruptions to logistics and commerce.
Safety advisories have been issued urging the public to secure loose objects, avoid flood-prone zones, and seek shelter during lightning.
Motorists are also cautioned to drive with extra care as heavy downpours are likely to result in slippery roads and reduced visibility across major highways.
